Old Skool Sundays

Atlanta hip-hop royalty celebrates

‘Old Skool Sundays’ at book release event

New book captures meteoric rise of Atlanta’s rap scene with rare pics and more

January 30, 2018 (Atlanta) — Acclaimed turntablist DJ Nabs and other members of Atlanta’s hip-hop elite gather to celebrate the release of “Old Skool Sundays – The Club Kaya Experience,” a book documenting the glory days of the city’s hip-hop and rap movement. The event drops 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at Mood Music/Soul Village in Little Five Points.

Music journalist Mark Hayes joins DJ Nabs and a laundry list of special guests –DJ Hurricane (Beastie Boys), Sean Paul (Youngbloodz), DJ Kemit, and DJ Doc– for an evening of music and memories. In addition to the book release, guests have a chance to see rare documentary footage of Old Skool Sundays live performances and interviews from Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri, Ludacris, Ja Rule, Youngbloodz, Lil Jon, DJ Drama, Phaedra Parks, The X-Ecutioners, Redman & Method Man, and more.

“Thank goodness I managed to keep just about everything from Old Skool Sundays,” said DJ Nabs, author of “Old Skool Sundays – The Club Kaya Experience.”  “I held onto photographs, flyers, you name it. This book really is a time capsule of an era we’ll never see again.”

In the late 1990s just before the city’s full-on hip-hop and rap explosion, Old Skool Sundays lit the spark. The brainchild of DJ Nabs, this legendary weekly music event at Club Kaya in Midtown Atlanta became the place to be, helping launch the careers of Jay Z, Ludacris, and others. Simultaneously, old school superstars from the Sugarhill Gang to Kurtis Blow regularly rocked the house. Of course, DJ Nabs served as ringmaster, helming the decks.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to share Atlanta music history with generations to come,” DJ Nabs explained. “Our city’s hip-hop story continues, and I’m proud to have been a part of such an exciting chapter.”
