Stone Temple Pilots have announced a new singer, Jeff Gutt, and shared a new song, “Meadow.” The band’s former vocalist Scott Weiland died in 2015 (and Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, who was at one time also a vocalist with Stone Temple Pilots, died in July of this year). Listen to “Meadow” below.
Gutt (pronounced goot) made his debut at a show at Los Angeles’ iconic Troubadour club last night. A former contestant on The X Factor, Gutt is also a veteran of the Detroit music scene and has been spending the last year writing and recording with the band (Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo, and Eric Kretz). Stone Temple Pilots plan to release a new album in spring 2018 on Atlantic/Rhino and they will also tour next year. Last night’s concert will premiere on SiriusXM this Friday, November 17 at 5 p.m. ET (on Howard Stern’s Howard 101 channel, as well as Lithium, channel 34).
Stone Temple Pilots went through 15,000 submissions online before selecting more than 30 singers to audition in person. Gutt was the only one who didn’t submit online, as DeLeo asked him to audition after seeing him perform in Detroit.
DeLeo explained in a press release: “Talk about a happy accident. It was clear right away that Jeff had the range to sing vocally challenging songs like ‘Piece of Pie’ and ‘Interstate Love Song.’ But we soon discovered that he also has a great ear for melody and knew how to write a song.”
DeLeo also said: “We wanted someone who would not only do our earlier songs justice, but would also write new songs and carve out a different path forward with us. It took some time, but we found our guy.”
Gutt had this to say: “No one will ever fill Scott’s shoes and I’m not trying to – he’s a legend. But these songs deserve to be performed and people want to hear them. I’m just honored that the guys chose me to help them continue to build this band’s legacy.”
